Life, believe, is not a dream
So dark as sages say;
Oft a little morning rain
Foretells a pleasant day.

--Charlotte Bronte

I started this directory because when I went looking for it, naturally assuming I'd find it somewhere, all I got was a bunch of Web pages put up by local governments aiming to promote economic development and tourism. Sometimes you just wish you could throw a tomato at a Web page.

So, before you email a recommendation for this list, know the definition. The subject matter has to be unique to the Pacific Northwest. For example, lists of homeless shleters don't qualify. Social problems, while important, are relatively undiverse and global. Where business people should go for fine dining and elegant martinis in your town most certainly doesn't qualify. The subject has to be a salient aspect of the region's individuality. Environmental subjects are obvious candidates; ten years ago sites re grunge rock would have qualified, but no longer, as you can now go to Perth, Australia and hear a local grunge band.

A convention I just adopted and haven't fully implemented is to precede sites that are mainly directories of links with an "i"(for "index"). Sites that provide significant amount of content are preceded by a "*".
